Branches on the Tree
Our Family Heritage
The Lowry and Nelson Family Tree

Hello, let me introduce myself. I’m John Lowry and these pages represent my attempt at searching out my own and my wife's family roots. It has taken me quite a bit of work to gather all of the information on these pages, so I hope you will find the information useful.

On these pages you’ll find the family genealogies of John Douglas Lowry (Camp and Lowry families) and Carol Sue Nelson (McDonald and Nelson families). The information used in these genealogies originated based on personal knowledge, family notes, and discussion with family members. Since Carol and I are familiar with members of recent family generations, we are certain as to the accuracy of much of the family listings.

In addition to the Camp, Lowry, McDonald, and Nelson families, the genealogies of the Magill, Rankin, and McSpadden families have been included as Lowry family links of interest. The Magill and Rankin family trees were added to the Lowry tree through the marriage of David Henderson Lowry to Emeline Matilda Magill in 1851. Much of the information about these families was located on the internet, and is consistent with known family information and library research. Whenever possible additional information on our family trees will be added to make this book more informative and helpful for tracing our family roots.

We don't always appreciate just how many people have been involved in making up our families as we have come to know them or how extensive our family heritage is. Every member of our family tree has contributed a lot to make us who we are, and what we are. And each of the families listed here has contributed something to each succeeding generation.

As I have researched the persons listed on these pages I have often wished that I could go back in time to meet them and hear their stories. Where the information was available I have found many interesting stories about our family members. Louis Nelson was a slave in Sweden who had to escape to America with his family to make a new life. The Lowry, Magill, and McSpadden ancestors were Presbyterian Protestants who had to leave first England and Scotland, and then Ireland (Northern Ireland) and come to America to escape religious persecution. I have found links to family members who have played important roles in our American history. The Rankins help to get slaves out of the South by the under ground railroad. They also shared their house in Ripley, Ohio with the Beachers, and it was there that Herritt Beacher Stowe gathered much of the information she needed to write Uncle Tom's Cabin. Samuel McSpadden sold gunpowder to Andrew Jackson for the Battle of New Orleans. Where possible the anecdotal information and stories about family members has been provided so readers can become familiar with family members.

You will also note that many of the family members listed seem to have traveled together as a group as they settled around the United States. If you will follow the dates and locations of families, you will see that the Nelsons came from Sweden to New York to Iowa and then to Kansas, and now live in Kansas, Louisiana, and Tennessee. The Lowrys, Magills, Rankins, and Houstons came from Ireland to Pennsylvania to Virginia to Tennessee, and are now found in Idaho, Maryland, Virginia and Alabama. A word of warning, I have listed three apparently different Lowry families. I don’t know if they are related, they came to America at different times, but if you look closely, you will find links which tie the families together.

I have gathered together as many of the families that have been a part of our past as possible. In this volume you will fined information on the almost 1700 family members of the 290 families listed which make up our past. These families make up the many branches to be found in our family tree. The names placed in this database have come from many sources and I have tried to give credit to those whose work I have used on the credit page of this web site. I’m sure that there are mistakes, but where possible I have tried to document the information by using reliable sources, or information form multiple sources.

John Lowry, October 19, 1998.
