Notes for James Lowry (Sr.)

Cause of Death: Gravel (Kidney Stone or stone in bladder)

Believe James moved to Tennessee from Virginia about 1806. J. Walker Lowry (son of James D. Lowry, Jr. and the parent of Lodusky C. Lowry who is buried in Old Mt. Harmony Cemetery) says he came from Ireland. J. Walker also says that James D. Lowry, Jr. was born three months after the family came to America (James tombstone does not say this). This does not explain how James Lowry (1771) became married to Nancy Davis from Virginia. Another researcher says James and Nancy and her parents lived in Dandridge, Jefferson County, Tennessee in the late 1790's, and the family had moved to McMinn County, Tennessee by 1820. Most of them, including Rebekah Jane Davis, James and Nancy Lowry are buried in the churchyard of Mt. Harmony Church in Niota, Tennessee. (Information provided by Jackie White, June 1998.) Reported to have been born in Virginia (Tennessee Mortality Schedule of 1850 shows Virginia as his birth place). October 21, 1805: Deed to James Lowry from James Campbell, Barren County, Kentucky, recorded January 14, 1806: 100 acres, $666.66, on north side of French Broad River adjacent to John McSpeddan (McSpadden) (see McSpadden). (from Land Deeds of Jefferson County, Tennessee, Register of Deeds VOG.G. (May 1804-January 1806). The Jefferson County tax list shows James Lowry (b. 1771) living in 1800 on 100 acres and during 1803 he obtained court order to operate a ferry on French Broad River. 1806 court records show a road running from the town of Dandridge to James Lowry's Ferry at the junction of the Seehorn's road. Also found that a family of Lowrys owned and operated the Lowry Ferry in the early days in Monroe County at the mouth of Tellico River and near the Tellico Blockhouse. Later this ferry was known as Niles Ferry and Niles Ferry Road is still located near Madisonville, Tennessee and extends into Blount County south of Maryville, Tennessee (from Tennessee Cousins, by Worth S. Ray). James established this ferry near his farm in 1803 until 1823. James Lowry (b. 1771) farmed the 100+ acres north of the French Broad River from 1805 to 1820-22. He sold the land purchased in 1805 for 1500 and then purchased 160 acres for $550.50 during 1822 and moved to McMinn County, Tennessee. A brick in the chimney of the home place in McMinn County, Mount Harmony, showed a date of 1823. A notice in the September Session 1817, Jefferson County, Tennessee: Ned, a negro boy now 16 years of age, by order of Court, is bound by indenture to James Lowry until he arrives at age 21. Deed Book Vol. Q-P. 190-191/1822, Jefferson County, Tennessee: James Lowry sold John Elliot 105 acres for $1500. Witnesses: John McSpadden, Daniel Lowry, Archibald McSpadden. Many of the Cunninghams, McCorskys, Isbells, McSpaddens and Naves settled in Monroe County, Tennessee around Four Mile Creek and Lowry's Ferry (Niles Ferry). -- Sometime in 1823, James Lowry and family moved from Jefferson County and settled along the Oostanaula Creek. They established farms in the Mount Harmony Community between Niota, Madisonville and North of Athens, McMinn County, Tennessee. Jefferson County, Tennessee: July Session - 1803: James Lowry obtained leave to keep a ferry on French Broad River and entered in bond with Samuel Swann and John Hughes as his securities and is rated as follows: For Wagon and Team 75 cents, Cart and Horse 37 1/2 cents, Man and Horse 8 1/2 cents, Horse per head 6 1/4 cents, Cattle per Head 4 cents, and Sheep and Hogs per Head 1 cent.
